Murphy, North Carolina was originally called Huningonton in 1835, after a post office but then later changed it name after a politician  Archibald Murphey, who began trading on the Unicol Turnpike, currently known as the Joe Brown Highway. According to Mountain Country, In 1839, a portion of Macon County became Cherokee County and in 1851, Murphy became the county seat. In the late 1800s, the Murphy Branch of the Western North Carolina Railroad opened. Now, Murphy has lots of cabins you can stay in to see the sites. If your a history buff you can stay in one of the cabins and be close to all the historical landmarks to see Murphy as you like.
